BC Ferries Announces Policy Update to Safely Transport Immobile Undamaged EVs

BC Ferries will begin accepting undamaged immobile EVs starting May 19 – a notable shift that improves how EVs can be transported across the coast and supports the growing role of electric vehicles in BC.

“Our industry has been actively engaged with BC Ferries on this issue, and we’re pleased to see BC Ferries is delivering solutions that recognize both safety requirements and the realities faced by EV owners and operators,” said Ken Hendricks, ARA Senior Advisor.

Damaged or defective lithium batteries present a serious fire risk in marine environments, and federal regulations require compromised EV batteries to be removed and transported separately. As a result, damaged or immobile EVs may still face transport restrictions where battery damage cannot be ruled out.

BC Ferries does not have the authority or technical capacity to inspect or certify compromised EV batteries, and there is currently no standardized framework for marine transport inspections. The policy will continue to evolve as regulations, technologies, and industry best practices develop.

This update creates more flexibility for operators, insurers, and EV owners moving vehicles throughout the province. Stay tuned for more developments over the coming months.
